Shimano brought out a new version of its 105 groupset in 2018, but how does it compare to the top of the range Dura-Ace? We’re going to show you, and even attempt a blind riding test! Can we feel the difference when we can’t see it?! Shimano R7000 vs Shimano R9100, let's see if we can tell...

In case you are unfamiliar, here is a quick run-down of Shimano’s groupset hierarchy for road bikes. The entry-level groupsets Shimano offers are Claris with 8 gears at the back, then sora, with 9. This is followed by Tiagra with 10, and then comes 11spd 105 which we have here. Beyond 105 you get Ultegra and then the range-topping Dura-ace which Shimano says is designed to meet the needs of pro cyclists. With each tier of groupset, you see a decrease in weight, an increase in price, and up to 105 an increase in gears. Performance is also improved between bottom and top, but when you look, there are many hallmarks of Dura Ace that appear at much cheaper price points.
Now we are going to compare the new 105, with the current Dura-ace mechanical. We are going to ride each groupset blindfolded and myself and Si are going to see if we can guess the difference. Unfortunately, it’s currently raining in the UK, so rather than ride blindfolded outside, we are going to do it on the turbo.
