[Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Bengal Warriors rise to second spot after edging U Mumba in a thriller

Bengal Warriors made it back-to-back wins at home after registering a 29-26 win over U Mumba at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday. Sukesh Hegde scored eight raid points for the hosts and Mohammad Nabibakhsh picked up four tackle points.

Arjun Deshwal got U Mumba off to a good start after a Super Raid in the very first raid of the match. However, after skipper Maninder Singh got Bengal Warriors on the scoreboard from a Do-or-die situation, it was pretty much level-pegging for most of the opening quarter with the hosts slightly in front with a 6-5 lead.

Bengal Warriors then took control of the contest after a couple of successful Do-or-die raids from Nabibakhsh and Maninder. They eventually enforced an All-Out following a Baldev Singh tackle and opened up a 13-7 lead with less than five minutes left in the half. The hosts went on to extend their lead after the All-Out with a well-executed Super Raid by Sukesh but another Super Raid by U Mumba’s Deshwal ensured that Bengal Warriors could only take a 16-13 lead into the break.

The second half began with raiders from both sides finding success. Bengal Warriors though took control as the half progressed with their defenders also making their presence felt. The good work on both ends of the mat by the hosts meant that they took a six-point lead into the final quarter of contest.

U Mumba though weren’t ready to throw in the towel yet and continued to fight as they looked to claw their way back into the encounter late on. The final five minutes saw U Mumba throw everything at Bengal Warriors’ defence without much reward initially.

However, a few swift raids by Deshwal – who had brought up his Super 10 by this stage – and decisive tackling from U Mumba’s defence made it a one-point game with seconds left on the clock. In the end though it was a pivotal Super Tackle by Rinku Narwal on Deshwal in the penultimate raid of the game that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for U Mumba and gave the home side a three-point win.

[Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Haryana Steelers beat U Mumba to leapfrog them in standings Vikash Kandola’s 9 raid points helped Haryana Steelers overcome U Mumba 30-27. Haryana Steelers held their nerve through a close contest to register a narrow 30-27 win over U Mumba at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Monday. Vikash Kandola played a starring role for Haryana Steelers with 9 raid points, including a couple of crucial points in the closing stages of the contest. U Mumba started brightly thanks to an early tackle by Harendra Kumar that sent Haryana Steelers’ dangerman Kandola to the bench. Arjun Deshwal then got in on the action with a successful two-point raid. Haryana Steelers, though, fought back as Kandola returned to the mat and executed a Super Raid to put his side into a 5-4 lead. The Season 2 champions responded with a two-point raid by Athul MS to retake the lead as both sets of raiders dominated the first 10 minutes of the contest. Just as it looked like Haryana Steelers were edging towards inflicting an All-Out, U Mumba’s Sandeep Narwal came up with a Super Tackle. However, Sandeep’s contribution merely delayed the inevitable as Haryana Steelers went on to enforce an All-Out on U Mumba and take a 13-8 lead. The first half came to a close with Haryana Steelers very much on top as their defenders also began to grow into the contest. They took a 16-8 lead into the break and ensured that U Mumba would start the second half with just four men on court. Haryana Steelers began the second period looking to inflict a second All-Out on U Mumba. However, Fazel ‘Sultan’ Atrachali executed a Super Tackle to thwart Haryana Steelers’ momentum, while giving U Mumba fresh impetus. Atrachali’s tackle helped turn the tides of the contest in U Mumba’s favour, but Haryana Steelers executed successive Super Tackles to maintain their lead. A two-point raid in a Do-or-Die situation by Sandeep Narwal finally helped usher in an All-Out on Haryana Steelers with a little over four minutes left to play. Though the score was 26-23 in favour of Haryana Steelers after the All-Out, U Mumba had momentum on their side. A couple of successful raids by Abhishek Singhand one by Athul reduced the gap to one point. Kandola, though, showed tremendous resolve and continued to score raid points for Haryana Steelers to squash U Mumba’s chances of a comeback and give his side a slender three-point victory. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Bengal Warriors end home leg with thrilling win against Bengaluru Bulls Bengal Warriors managed to get the better of Bengaluru Bulls in a high-scoring thriller by a scoreline of 42-40 in the final match at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday. Mohammad Nabibakhsh contributed all-around as he scored 3 raid points to go with his High 5. But the star of the show for Bengal Warriors was skipper Maninder Singh who scored 17 raid points and helped his team overcome Pawan Sehrawat’s 19-raid point effort. Bengal Warriors raced ahead in the opening minutes through their captain Maninder Singh, who put in four successful raids, including a two-pointer, without being tackled even once. However, he got Super Tackled by Ankit in the 7th minute to put Bengaluru Bulls in the lead at 7-8. Mohammad Nabibakhsh’s unsuccessful Do-or-Die raid followed by Rohit Kumar’s successful one then helped Bengaluru Bulls open up a four-point advantage. But Sukesh Hegde took out Mahender Singh in a Do-or-Die raid and followed it up with another successful two-point Do-or-Die raid to tie the scores at 12-all Maninder then managed a touch on Ajay before Bengal Warriors completed an All-Out three minutes before the half ended by tackling Sumit Singh, taking a one-point lead in the contest. They hung on to that lead going into halftime as the scores favoured them 16-15. The ‘Hi-Flyer’ started the second period in style for Bengaluru Bulls with a Super Raid, before Saurabh Nandal extended their lead by sending Hegde to the bench. Sehrawat then put in three back-to-back successful raids which eventually inflicted the All-Out on Bengal Warriors, opening up a seven-point lead for Bengaluru Bulls. Sehrawat brought up his Super 10 soon after Bengal Warriors reassembled and Bengaluru Bulls’ defence helped the team take control of the match by sending the dangerous Maninder to the bench. However, Bengal Warriors managed to tackle down Sehrawat in his next two raids and then brought the score difference down to four through Nabibakhsh and Maninder in attack. With a quarter of the contest still to be played, Nabibakhsh showcased his all-round ability with a successful tackle on Sehrawat which brought up his first vivo Pro Kabaddi High 5, while Maninder and Hegde’s raids added up to another All-Out on Bengaluru Bulls and put Bengal Warriors back on top at 32-31. Both teams chose to rely on bonus points after that stage as the scores remained tied. Maninder’s Super Raid with less than three minutes left on the clock looked like it could turn things Bengal Warriors’ way, but Sehrawat struck back with a two-point raid to send Nabibakhsh and Rinku to the bench and also level the scores at 38 apiece. Maninder and Sehrawat matched each other point-for-point from there but Bengal Warriors pulled off back-to-back tackles on Sehrawat and Rohit Kumar in Bengaluru Bulls’ final two raids to help their team claim victory. Bengal Warriors and Dabang Delhi played out an entertaining draw, with both teams finishing on 30 points in the second match of the day at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. K. Prapanjan and Naveen Kumar clinched Super 10s for Bengal and Delhi respectively in a high-intensity encounter as both teams missed out on an opportunity to go top of the VIVO Pro Kabaddi League table. A raid storm was expected prior to the match as both sides had been amongst the finest raiding units in Season 7. And true to their name, Dabang started with a bang, opening their account with a super raid and inflicting the first all-out of the match in the fifth minute. Raiders Chandran Ranjit and Naveen Kumar looked in their aggressive bests for the Delhi side in the initial minutes but Bengal slowly clawed their way back in the mid portions of the half. But Dabang ended the first half, just like how they started, with the team pulling off a super tackle, courtesy a clever review, in the dying minutes to build a healthy lead. The first half ended 18-11 in favour of the Delhi side. Delhi started the second half on a high but a 4-point game with 12 minutes remaining in the match – a super-tackle by Jeeva Kumar and then a two-point raid by Sukesh Hegde -- reduced the gap between the teams to four points. The turnaround was complete when Bengal clinched their first all-out of the match with less than seven minutes remaining in the match. Delhi’s unsuccessful raid percentage increased in the second half while Bengal improved with Prapanjan pulling off a Super 10 with 4 minutes remaining. Naveen ‘Express’ Kumar was in no mood to give up the match though and ensured the match remained close, securing another Super 10 (his sixth of the season) in the process. A do-or-die raid in the final minute opened an opportunity for Bengal to clinch the match but their initial joy was cut short when a review proved Bengal’s raider had fallen short in his attempt. The match ended in a tie, a fair reflection of the closeness of the contest. Watch the highlights of the match in English. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Hooda’s heroics undone by Haryana Steelers’ defence as both teams settle for a tie Haryana Steelers and Jaipur Pink Panthers played out a back-and-forth contest that saw them settle for a 32-32 tie at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday. Deepak Hooda scored 14 raid points for Jaipur Pink Panthers but High 5s from Haryana Steelers’ Ravi Kumar and Sunil helped their team get three points from the match. A close battle between the raiders from both sides ensured that neither team was able to run away with the lead in the first quarter of the match. Hooda kept the points coming for Jaipur Pink Panthers, while Prashanth Kumar Rai and Vikash Kandola found success for Haryana Steelers. However, Hooda’s successful raid in the 10th minute started an excellent run for Jaipur Pink Panthers which saw them inflict an All-Out just three minutes later to take a six-point lead. Haryana Steelers, though, fought back after reentering the mat and sent Hooda to the bench in his first raid itself. Kandola soon turned on the heat by first taking out Pavan TR and then putting in a three-point Super Raid to help Haryana Steelers inflict an All-Out of their own. Haryana Steelers then sent Nitin Rawal and Nilesh Salunke to the bench courtesy of their defence to go into halftime with an 18-14 lead. The defenders from both sides started the second period on a positive note which helped Haryana Steelers maintain their lead. But a two-point raid from Hooda, where he got touches on Rai and Vikas Kale, cut the gap to just two points. Ravi Kumar kept the All-Out at bay, though, with a Super Tackle on Hooda which also brought up his High 5. But once Hooda was revived through Elavarasan’s tackle on Kandola, the Jaipur Pink Panthers skipper immediately struck by reaching his Super 10 with a touch on his counterpart Dharmaraj Cheralathan. Naveen kept scoring bonus points for Haryana Steelers to keep them in the lead, but he was soon taken down by Sandeep Dhull which helped Jaipur Pink Panthers inflict the All-Out and reduce the lead to just a solitary point. They drove home their advantage in the ensuing minutes with successful tackles on Haryana Steelers’ main raiders Kandola and Rai to sit on a three-point lead with under a minute left. But Haryana Steelers sent Hooda to the bench in a do-or-die raid before Cheralathan surprised Dhull with a Toe Touch to make it a one-point game. Rai then managed to score in the penultimate raid to tie the game and Salunke put in an empty raid to end the match as both teams took three-points from the match. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Patna Pirates outplay Jaipur Pink Panthers through Pardeep and Lee’s smart raiding Pardeep Narwal’s excellent 14 raid point-performance, supported by Neeraj Kumar’s High 5 and Jang Kun Lee’s intelligent raiding in the dying minutes, gave Patna Pirates a 36-33 victory over Jaipur Pink Panthers at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday. Sushil Gulia came off the bench to score 8 points in 8 raids for Jaipur Pink Panthers and Sandeep Dhull managed another High 5, but the team was unable to overcome the three-time champions in the closing minutes of the game. The raiders from both sides got early success before Patna Pirates’ defence struck by sending Deepak Hooda to the bench through Neeraj Kumar. Another tackle on Nitin Rawal then gave Patna Pirates more momentum before Pardeep Narwal’s Super Raid put them firmly in the driver’s seat. Pardeep then put in three more successful raids to bring Jaipur Pink Panthers on the verge of an All-Out, before a Super Tackle on the ‘Record-Breaker’ by Sandeep Dhull turned things around for his side. Ajinkya Pawar then put in two successful Do-or-Die raids, split by Amit Hooda’s tackle on Jang Kun Lee, to reduce Patna Pirates down to three men on the mat. Jaideep came to Patna Pirates’ rescue just at the right time to Super Tackle Pawar before Pardeep got a touch point on Rawal to reduce the score difference to one as Jaipur Pink Panthers led 15-14 at halftime. Amit Hooda’s Super Tackle on Pardeep in his first raid of the second period and Dhull’s Super Tackle on Monu soon after extended Jaipur Pink Panthers’ lead. But Lee’s two-point raid followed by Pardeep’s touches on Deepak and Nilesh Salunke in successive raids then reduced Jaipur Pink Panthers down to a solitary man, which soon translated to an All-Out to bring the score difference back to one point at 23-24 with 12 minutes left to play. Pardeep reached his Super 10 after the reset with a two-point raid to put Patna Pirates in the lead. But Dhull’s tackle on Pardeep in his next raid put Jaipur Pink Panthers back in the lead along with bringing up the defender’s High 5. Patna Pirates went back in the lead through Lee, but Sushil Gulia’s Super Raid brought back parity at 29-29 with just four minutes remaining on the clock. The teams kept trading blows from this point as Pardeep and Lee for Patna Pirates, and Deepak and Sushil for Jaipur Pink Panthers, kept the scoreboard ticking. But Neeraj Kumar’s successful tackles on Deepak and Sushil in quick time gave Patna Pirates a slender lead going into the final seconds. With a minute left to play, Lee ran down the clock brilliantly while Patna Pirates’ defence allowed Sushil just one point in the penultimate raid to help their team emerge successful by three points.
