5 Genius NBA Trick Plays

A lot of times, NBA players and coaches resort to some unorthodox and creative ways to execute their game plan. And today we’re gonna take a look at 5 of the most interesting NBA trick plays. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. First up is one of the most genius plays that I’ve seen. 99% of the time, especially after late game time outs, teams inbound the ball on the side where they attack. While here the Lakers inbound the ball under their own basket, and trick the Hornets into guarding towards the wrong side. That leaves Kobe completely wide open for the dunk. A genius little trick by Mike D’Antoni who was the Lakers coach at the time. It’s crazy that he caught all of the players as well as the coaching staff for the Hornets off guard with this one, so nobody said a single thing to warn the others. Next, it’s probably the wildest play ever drawn up by a coach, and I’m going to let Paul Westphal who was leading the Phoenix Suns during the 1993 season explain this himself. Number 3 is a beautiful play to watch and it’s called the elevator doors. I mentioned it in a previous video about Steph Curry, and this is an excuse to go through it again. As you can see, the 2 players who make the screen, kind of close like elevator doors. So the shooter can go through and get open for the shot. A lot of teams use this set, it’s a great offensive solution, interesting to execute, and very interesting for us the viewers to watch it. Play number 4 is the Andre Miller special. I’m surprised that the fake time out isn’t even more popular. The defense very often just assumes that a time is going to be called so the players kinda relax and that opens up a very easy opportunity for a layup. Before we go to the last play I just wanted to say thank you once again to Squarespace for sponsoring today’s video. They make it so easy to build a beautiful website or online store. That actually motivated me to build one for myself. I bought a domain just yesterday, and I am in the process of picking a theme and adding stuff in there. For all of you that ask me in the comments, what type of gear I use, or what’s my lighting setup, everything is going to be there. Coming soon. And last play is improvised and a little bit of a streetball solution. This does require a lot of precision however. You have to throw it perfectly so that it comes straight back to you and also make sure you have both feet in bounds before you catch the ball. We’ve seen this creative play a few times. It’s the most natural thing to do when all the teammates are tightly contested, so the only thing left is to throw the ball off of the defenders back.
