Description:

Ufa, Russia, June 7, 2019 - Gabriele Nelli led Italy to a convincing 3-1 (25-23, 13-25, 25-20, 25-23) win over USA on the opening day of the second weekend of the 2019 FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League, scoring a match-high 28 points.

The 28 points of Italy's 25-year-old opposite balanced out the 24 scored by his American counterpart Benjamin Patch.

USA tried to outserve the Italians (and indeed served 9 aces to 6), but in the end the European side prevailed even while trailing the Americans in total points, 88-91.

It was Italy's third win in four matches. USA, hosts of the Final Six in Chicago from July 10-14, have now dropped to a 1-3 record.

The second weekend of the men's VNL had previously opened with some exciting action, including an all-time high blocking performance by Poland against France. The reigning world champions went down in four to France, but registered 19 blocks, bettering the previous team record of 18 set last year by Italy in their 2-3 defeat to Korea.

LIKE A BOSS Compilation | Craziest Moments | Volleyball World ᴴᴰ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yelZecgkO68 New Video » https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyvLV44U358&t=4s Subscribe » Volleyball World: https://www.youtube.com/c/VolleyballWorldChanel Turin, Italy, September 28, 2018 - Defending champions Poland never left in any doubt who the boss was, promptly took the first set to seal their 2018 FIVB World Championship semifinal ticket and knock out hosts Italy - despite eventually losing the match. Poland totally controlled the crucial first set from the very beginning, cruising to an astonishingly easy 25-14, silencing the sellout crowd at the Pala Alpitour and prompting huge celebrations as their subs swarmed the court like it was the end of the match. With Poland coach Vital Heynen bringing on his subs after the deal was done, Italy managed to balance the game and show just a bit more spirit to at least finish the tournament with a 3-2 (14-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 15-11) win - though it was hardly any consolation. In a sold-out Pala Alpitour, Italy was rewarded by a warm applause despite failing to offer their best effort against Poland, who enter the semifinals with full merit. Italy's National Anthem needed no background music as over 12,000 fans chanted it with all their voice: a perfect prelude to a barely impossible collective effort, as Poland needed to win one single set or score 61 total points to clinch first place in Pool J of the Final Six - and eliminate the home team. It took only one set, though, with Poland too focused and tactically prepared against the desperate efforts of the opponent: coach Vital Heynen asked Michal Kubiak to mark Ivan Zaytsev one-on-one, and the experiment was a success as the Polish captain hit two killer blocks on his rival and accumulated 7 points in a single set. After achieving the main goal, coach Heynen chose to give space to the players on the bench; and Italy, set free of the huge pressure they suffered as the host of the Final Six, could then play more freely. As the Italians try to imagine their future and start preparing for the long road to Tokyo 2020, good news for coach Gianlorenzo Blengini came from Luigi Randazzo's impressive fourth set (7 points, 7/8 attack for the 24-year old) and Davide Candellaro's 12 points coming out of the bench. Mateusz Bieniek lead Poland's scoring with 12 points, as the others saved their best for Saturday. Bangkok, Thailand, June 6, 2019 - Turkey outplayed Thailand in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) at the Indoor Stadium Huamark in Bangkok on Thursday. Giovanni Guidetti, coach of Turkey: "First of all, I would like to thank Thailand Volleyball Association for organizing an amazing tournament. It was amazing for us to play here. They have such great fan presence every day at the stadium. We are very happy to play here. About the game today, I would like to thank my players for playing a perfect match. We played amazing blocking and defence. I am really proud of my team because we know Thailand is a great volleyball team and it is never easy to beat them. To beat them 3-0 is beyond my expectation. So congratulations to my team and coach Danai and his team." Kubra Caliskan, captain of Turkey: "It was not easy to beat Thailand because they have so many fans to support them. I am very happy to win and get three points." Danai Sriwacharamaytakul, coach of Thailand: "We have to admit that we lost to them in every way. We have not fully recovered from the last match, but our players tried best to fight against them. Most importantly, we still have another two weeks to play. We need to recover and maintain our players to be ready for the rest of the tournament." When asked about his expectations about the next tournament, he added: "This year, we don’t have much time to prepare for this tournament. But we have our ultimate goal. VNL is a test tournament for the players who will suit our system most, in order to play the best performance in both legs of the 2020 Olympic Qualification." Nootsara Tomkom, captain of Thailand: "Congratulations to Turkey for the victory. I think today we faced one of the strongest teams in the tournament. I believe everyone in the team tried their best today. But because of our fatigue from the 5-set match yesterday against the Dominican Republic, we could not perform our best and play according to what we expected."
