Description:

Nanjing, China, July 7, 2019 – Liu Yanhan and Gong Xiangyu guided China to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21) win over Turkey to finish their 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League campaign with another bronze medal.

“We all played heroes in this match because we played like a team to win this match,” Liu Yanhan said. “I’m very happy to play in this team and see all our hard work pay off with this win.”

Liu Yanhan and Gong scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, to lead China to the four-set win, while Ebrar Karakurt had a strong scoring performance by finishing with 31 points.

In the first set, Turkey held the lead briefly until Gong Xiangyu got involved on offence and defence for the Chinese side. The hosts managed to gain a two-point lead at 21-19, but Turkey fought back to level the score. In the succeeding plays, Liu Yan got her team to gain another two-point lead, but Turkey still had some firepower left to score. Gong scored on a powerful swing from the right flank and ended the long rally with another spike to give China the win 25-23.

China carried over their momentum in the second set and built a comfortable lead courtesy of Gong and Liu Yanhan’s powerful spikes. On the other side, Karakurt was Turkey’s lone bright spot on offence as her teammates were neutralised. At 21-14, Hande Baladin’s serve went out of bounds, then Gong put China to within two points from closing the set. An attack slide by Wang Yuanyuan and an attack error by Karakurt gave China the 2-0 lead in the match at 25-15.

China continued to rally and push their opponents back in the third set, as Liu Yanhan hit wilfully against the Turkish blockers. China held on to a slim lead until Kubra Caliskan stepped into the service line. The Turkish middle blocker put pressure on her serve, allowing her side to gain the advantage. Baladin’s block and Karakurt’s spike completed the comeback at 25-20.

By the fourth set, it was a spike-off between Karakurt and Liu Yanhan. Liu Xiaotong scored an ace and attack to give lead 14-12 and Liu Yanhan’s heroics, including an adjustment on the spike through mid-air, rewarded China with a four-point cushion into the technical timeout. China kept scoring, but Akman was once again at the service line that earned Turkey some points to cut down the lead, but Liu Yanhan scored from the back row and Liu Xiaotong scored on an attack to seal the bronze medal victory 25-21.

Nanjing, China, July 7, 2019 – Andrea Drews delivered a powerful performance scoring 33 points to help the United States post a five-set comeback win against Brazil in the final on Sunday to claim successive FIVB Volleyball Nations League titles. “I’m proud of us and how we made a lot of nice changes throughout the match and come up with a win,” Drews said. “Being down 0-2 is really constricting but also it’s now or never. If you’re not swinging and your not going out after it like a house on fire, then what have do you have to lose at that point. We all kind of just buckled up and kind of made big swing and it paid off.” Drews had a solid performance from the attack line recording 32 spikes and contributed a block to her team’s total 10 blocks. Kelsey Robinson and Haleigh Washington contributed 15 and 10 points, respectively. Brazil also had three players scoring in double-figures – Gabi Guimaraes, Lorenne Geraldo Teixeira and Mara Ferreira Leao. Gabi and Lorenne did most of the scoring with 20 points apiece, while Mara added 15. USA got off to a good start as Brazilian hitters encountered some problems in converting on their attack attempts. The North American side held a 10-6 lead from playing great defence and finding the open court for their attacks. However, Brazil refused to give in to the pressure and started a good run utilising their net defence led by Mara. The Brazilian middle blocker also contributed on offence with her quick hits. Natalia Pereira and Ana Beatriz Correa joined in the block party with three straight deflections that locked up the set for Brazil 25-20. USA started the second set with the lead but Brazil displayed great intensity on offence and defence. As Mara scored to tie the game at 18-all, her teammate Natalia Pereira suddenly sprained her calf, leaving a void in the Brazilian offence. However, Ana Paula Borgo, Lorenne and Gabi stepped up as they powered their way to claim the 25-22 win. Drews took some hard swings to break through the tough Brazilian net defence, then setter Lauren Carlini helped out on defence and distributed her sets well to involve the others on offence. USA mounted a big lead and protected it to extend the match with a 25-15 win in the third set. Brazil reloaded on offence and rolled on defence to gain an early advantage in the fourth set, but Drews kept USA within striking distance as she drilled strong spikes. Her off-the-block spike snatched the lead from Brazil, starting a huge run. USA completed to extend the match to a tiebreaker after a strong hit by Drews and an error by Gabi on the attack 25-21. Brazil scored the first point the final set, but USA continued to respond to every point the South Americans made. At the score of 5-all, USA suddenly gained a three-point advantage from a kill by Drews, an ace by Robinson and another kill by Jordan Larson. Brazil had an answer for the USA run, as Gabi, Lorenne and Mara helped their side to cut down the lead to just one point at 14-13. However, an antenna touch on the Brazilian attack sealed USA’s fate of winning their second title at the VNL 15-13. Ekaterinburg, Russia, June 19, 2019 – Thailand defeated Russia in four sets in their match in Ekaterinburg on Wednesday. Russia coach Alexander Krasilnikov said: "We are not accustomed to this style of playing - to the Thai team, to the Asian style. Thailand after the first points coped with the reception and beat us through a positional game. We could not cope on the block and in defence too. "In the VNL this is our problem - we start the match well, but then we start to have problems. Perhaps today we lost concentration." Russia captain Yevgeniya Startseva said: "Psychologically, it was hard for us, because it was our game. We did not play today. We have known the Thai team for a long time, we knew what to expect from them. Alas, we could not cope with it. The opponents very often played quickly, and there were a lot of combinations that we could not cope with. Now we play against the Netherlands team, this match will not be easier. It all depends on us, on how we prepare. We need to find our confidence, and it can only be found on the court." Thailand head coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul said: "We have not changed anything in tactics compared to our usual game. Today we defended very well against the Russian national team and attacked aggressively. I can not say anything about the psychological state of an opponent, but such games happen to everyone. Of course, we are very pleased with this victory, we need to continue to play in the same spirit."
