"Nano" by Mike Manning

A new law mandating the public’s use of nanotechnology meets resistance from hacktivists who are conspiring to thwart the impending roll-out of a dangerous hardware upgrade.

In the near future, advances in biotechnology have bridged the gap between man and machine. Developed by ASPIRE, a seemingly benevolent corporation inspired by the likes of Apple and Google, “Nanos” are microscopic, probe-like machines that have the ability to interact with human DNA and alter expressions of the genome within seconds of entering the bloodstream. For the purpose of health or “bio-maintenance,” they have the ability to alter the body’s autonomic systems and metabolic rates, regulate fat and/or muscle production, and even slow the aging process. They also allow for fun, non-essential “bio-mods,” such as the ability to change one’s hair color, raise one’s adrenaline, or even enhance one’s pleasure during sex.

ZOLEE, a member of an underground network of hackers who are conspiring to thwart the impending roll-out of the government mandated “Nano 2.0,” intends to steal classified data pertaining to Aspire’s new government contract. But in order to do so, she must access the Aspire Nano Network using the login credentials of MAX ROTH, a corrupt agent with the Biotechnology Crime Division (BCD). His connection to the Aspire Network is biometrically encrypted, accessible only via a key that’s docked to his arm--a hardlined connection to his own Nanos. Posing as a prostitute, Zolee hopes to seduce Roth (a known deviant with pension for Nano app-enhanced sex), distracting and ultimately subduing him so that she may hack into his account and steal the sensitive data. This proves to be easier said than done during an intense game of cat and mouse, leading to an exciting showdown that pits Zolee against the sadistic BCD Agent.

When a down-on-his-luck inventor builds a time machine to change the past, he unwittingly sets off a disastrous chain of events. This short film was made based on the following constraints: • Cannot take place entirely in one location. • Someone must say the words "time travel." • Two characters must have a long-standing rivalry. • When one character was a kid, he/she used to wish he/she could travel back in time to see real-life dinosaurs. • One character is a wine lover and is very picky/elitist about their wine. • One character prefers bubble baths to showers. • Someone has to say: "I have to go back." A hard worker, he finds himself stuck in an endless cycle of tasks and deadlines, and the idea of going home for the day begins to recede into the distance. But he has a time-sensitive secret that makes overtime a tough proposition for Ralph. And when it comes out, all hell breaks loose for Ralph, redefining what it means to have a bad day at the office. Stylishly shot and narratively tight, this comic horror short, directed by Craig D. Foster, has plenty of visual aplomb, wit and bite to keep viewers engaged. The pace of the film is nimble, quick and sure-footed, complete with flashes of humor and romance that add dimension. Like many great horror films, the craftsmanship of the film is excellent: the camera is always where it needs to be to create the most dramatic impact, the performances are perfectly calibrated and the editing keeps everything humming along, creating a compelling and even gripping experience. But ultimately, this short film is highly relatable, taking a situation that many workers are familiar with and injecting it with great fun, enjoyment and maybe even a little wish fulfillment. With aplomb and panache, "Overtime" is an energetic, impeccably crafted romp through how work never seems to end, how we sometimes want to throttle our co-workers -- and how our needs bump up against the dictates of the office, to superbly comic effect. That’s the thesis of K-Michel Parandi’s “From the Future with Love.” This bleak short film explores a world where police now work for privatized agencies that offer different levels of protection depending on how much you pay. It quickly becomes evident that this is a turn for the future’s worst as these agencies resemble gangsters, each with their own turf and “services.” After mistreating a civilian with low coverage, three cops become the victim of the system they perpetuate. Our team calls this short required viewing for its dramatic and prescient message about the state of our justice system. Ivan Kander from Short of the Week says about the film: “If Robocop and Dick Tracy had a baby, this film would be their illegitimate lovechild—a gangster thriller set in the future. Really, it’s film noir dazzled up with high-tech screens and gizmos.” DUST: Binge-watchable Sci-fi DUST is the first multi-platform destination for binge watchable sci-fi. But this time machine can only go back in time by one minute. Ray exploits his feature as much as possible, helping him bet on races and drink more beer, much to his wife's exasperation. But at one crucial moment, his time machine offers him a do-over at an important point in his life. But it has unforeseen consequences, putting him face-to-face with his choices -- and giving him a second chance in an unexpected way. Writer-director Dave Redman's clever comedy has a fun, quirky conceit at its center, which it explores with great wit and cleverness. Starting with its lean, focused script and nimble editing, the film bubbles along in its first half, its pacing matching Ray's blithe enjoyment of his time machine -- but also to the exclusion of everything else, like preparing for a new baby. His wife becomes increasingly concerned and frustrated, which leads to a turning point in their relationship and a difficult truth to face. But it's also the impetus for Ray to face himself, change his ways and then, with the help of his time machine, take action to rectify his mistakes. With the movement of the film's emotional arc, the film takes a surprising turn near its second half, as Ray comes face-to-face with his behavior and its effects on others. The style shifts into more of a high-stakes drama with surprisingly propulsive action, complete with pulse-pounding score and dynamic camerawork. What blends the two halves of the film are the effective performances and their consistent characterization, which are played for subtlety and realism instead of screwball antics. Ray's reaction to his discovery of a time machine is both disbelief and delight, but it's played as if on the same continuum as any other "man cave" escape, like playing an immersive new video game. Equating the time machine as just another giant toy for Ray to play with and underplaying its powers offers many laughs. But the central motif of the film begins to shift in meaning along with Ray's character arc, leading to a genuine shift in his development that feels logical and consistent within the film's parameters. "Lazy Boy" is a double entendre of a title, and the short has plenty of laughs and fun with its exploration of time travel, along with its portrait of oblivion in the face of life-altering change. But it's also a surprisingly serious examination of what it means to grow up, embrace responsibility and even become a father who must learn to put others before himself. It's a rare comedy that, in fact, begs to be a little longer, with just a bit more time for Ray to internalize his insight and take final action. As it is, "Lazy Boy" points out -- in a hilariously literal fashion -- that sometimes it takes just one minute to reset our words and actions, and take responsibility for the life we're creating today.
