Description:

Home team Tamil Thalaivas and Puneri Paltan played out a highly entertaining 31-31 draw in a see-sawing second match of VIVO Pro Kabaddi League Season 7 at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Sunday. Youngsters Ajeet and Manjeet were the stars for Thalaivas and Paltan respectively in a match that had been billed as a clash of the Kabaddi stalwarts.

Rahul Chaudhari, Ajay Thakur and Mohit Chhillar are all Kabaddi royalty for a reason, and it was hardly a surprise when Tamil Thaliavas made a dominant start to the match on their home mat. The early strategy from the home team and coach E Bhaskaran was clearly to use Rahul Chaudhari in the raids and preserve Ajay Thakur for the latter stages. But the plan backfired as the Paltan defence held firm and troubled the Tamil raiders. Pankaj Mohite was once again the best raider on the mat for Pune as the team inflicted the first all-out on the Thalaivas with nine minutes remaining till half time. The Chennai-based team started confidently after the reset though, with Rahul Chaudhari and local-boy Ajeet dominating the raids. The first half ended 15-13 in favour of Puneri Paltan.

Thalaivas’ defence had a better game plan in the second half, and Ran Singh’s consistent, successful tackles turned things around for the Chennai team, clinching their first all-out within two minutes after the restart. Defender Girish Ernak had an uncharacteristically poor game in the night and was the target for the Tamil raiders while Manjeet’s all-round efforts for Paltan kept the battle neck-to-neck. Hadi Tajik’s tackle with just under five minutes remaining took out Rahul Chaudhari but Ajith restored parity with a brilliant follow-up raid, sending Girish Ernak to the dugout in the process.

Pankaj Mohite, playing his first Pro Kabaddi season, defied his experience, to push his side ahead with little over three minutes remaining and reducing the Thailavas on the mat to one. But Ajith, who was the last man standing, had other plans, securing four points in a Super Raid, with slightly over two minutes remaining in the encounter, to tilt the balance once again in Thalaivas’ favour.

But both Rahul Chaudhari for Thalaivas and Manjeet for Paltan failed in their attempts at Do-or-Die raids in the final minute which saw the sides settling for a draw.

[Video Courtesy: Star Sports] U Mumba’s strong second-half display helps them overcome Tamil Thalaivas Tamil Thalaivas finished their home leg winless after a 24-29 loss to U Mumba in their final match at Chennai. U Mumba ensured that Tamil Thalaivas finished their vivo Pro Kabaddi Season 7 home leg without a win by registering a 29-24 victory over the hosts at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Friday. Athul MS was the leading scorer in the match with seven raid points and he played a big role in U Mumba’s second-half fightback. Tamil Thalaivas began the match positively and raced into a 4-1 lead after four minutes with ‘Showman’ Rahul Chaudhari scoring three raid points, including a two-point raid. U Mumba gradually grew into the contest with some strong tackling and tied the score at 5-5 after the opening 10 minutes. However, Tamil Thalaivas soon reestablished their lead thanks to a couple of successive raids from ‘Iceman’ Ajay Thakur. He received support from Chaudhari, who picked up another two-point raid to extend the home side’s lead to 9-6. With halftime approaching, it looked like Tamil Thalaivas would inflict an All-Out. But a Super Tackle by Harendra Kumar on Chaudhari denied Tamil Thalaivas the All-Out and helped U Mumba reduce their deficit to 10-12 at the break. V. Ajith Kumar began the second half with a successful raid for the hosts only for Sandeep Narwal to respond with a two-point raid for U Mumba. The visitors moved into the lead five minutes into the second period after a two-point raid by Athul MS made it 15-14 in U Mumba’s favour. Things would get better for U Mumba soon after courtesy of another two-point raid by Athul that enforced an All-Out on Tamil Thalaivas. With momentum now on their side, U Mumba looked to build on their lead. However, Tamil Thalaivas weren’t prepared to let U Mumba dictate terms and clawed their way back into the contest with some decisive defending and swift raiding. A successful Do-or-Die raid by Chaudhari with a little less than six minutes to play saw Tamil Thalaivas cut U Mumba’s lead to just three points. A successful raid by Sandeep Narwal as well as successful tackles by Rajaguru Subramanian and Harendra soon after halted Tamil Thalaivas’ momentum. The hosts fought valiantly till the end, but U Mumba kept their discipline and defended resolutely to see off Tamil Thalaivas’ charge for a five-point win. In Match 39 of Pro Kabaddi 2019, A bizarre final minute raid by Nitin Tomar handed a draw to Tamil Thalaivas against home side Puneri Paltan at a fully packed Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Pune on Wednesday. The raider’s inability to pull off a valid raid in the final minute of the match resulted in All-Out that gave Thalaivas the three points they required to level the match at 36-36. Ajith Kumar was the star for the Tamil Thalaivas team with a Super 10 (18 raid points) but the Chennai team will have Pune’s bad planning to thank for the one point they secured in the night. Manjeet (11 raid points ) and Pankaj Mohite (8 raid points) impressed in the raiding department for the Pune side who would rue missing the chance of jumping to 8th on the points table. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Iceman’s successful buzzer raid helps Tamil Thalaivas tie with U.P. Yoddha U.P. Yoddha and Tamil Thalaivas were involved in a see-saw encounter that ended in a 28-28 tie at the Patliputra Indoor Stadium in Patna on Wednesday. Ajay ‘Iceman’ Thakur lived up to his name and scored in the crucial buzzer raid to help his side tie the match. The contest began with Tamil Thalaivas getting on the scoreboard first, but U.P. Yoddha didn’t have to wait for too long for their opening point either. Both teams looked to stay within touching distance of each other and were tied at 3-3 after the first five minutes. U.P. Yoddha then went on to assume control of the match soon after courtesy of a few successful raids by Shrikant Jadhav and Monu Goyat as well as a couple of successful tackles. U.P. Yoddha’s charge resulted in the first All-Out of the match on Tamil Thalaivas and gave them a 10-5 lead over the southerners. Tamil Thalaivas fought back and chipped away at U.P. Yoddha’s lead thanks to robust tackles from Manjeet Chhillar and swift raids from Rahul ‘Showman’ Chaudhari. That said, U.P. Yoddha’s defence also held firm and ensured that they kept their five-point lead intact as they went into the break with a 16-11 lead. The second half got underway with Thakur turning on the style. The Tamil Thalaivas captain scored three raid points from his first two raids of the half to reduce U.P. Yoddha’s lead to 16-15. However, U.P. Yoddha weren’t prepared to succumb to an All-Out without a fight despite having less players on the mat. They defended in resolute fashion and made it difficult for Tamil Thalaivas to enforce the decisive All-Out. Successive Super Tackles, in fact, opened up a 23-17 lead for U.P. Yoddha at one stage. However, a successful two-point raid by Shabeer Bapu and another Manjeet tackle finally inflicted the All-Out on U.P. Yoddha and tied the score at 23-23 with a little over eight minutes to play. U.P. Yoddha responded with successful raids from Rishank Devadiga and Monu, but Tamil Thalaivas weren’t prepared to allow them to reestablish their lead. Successful raids by Chaudhari and Bappu cancelled out the raid points from their counterparts and set up a nervy finish with the score tied at 26-26 with three minutes left in the game. In the end, neither team could emerge victorious after Thakur picked up a touch point on the buzzer raid as both teams shared the spoils. Top Performers: U.P. Jaipur Pink Panthers held on to their slender first-half lead to see off a spirited Tamil Thalaivasfight back and register a 28-26 victory at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday. This victory helped the visitors extend their lead at the top of the Season 7 standings to seven points. Jaipur Pink Panthers raced away to a 4-point lead early in the contest as their Corners – Sandeep Dhull and Amit Hooda – managed to strike early. But Tamil Thalaivas were equal to the task and managed to equalise at 6-6 through ‘Iceman’ Ajay Thakur and ‘Showman’ Rahul Chaudhari. Jaipur Pink Panthers managed a Super Tackle on each of the Tamil Thalaivas’ star raiders in quick succession to stay ahead. Deepak Narwal then came off the bench and put in three back-to-back successful raids. Thakur got a touch point on the dangerous Amit Hooda before half time as his team trailed Jaipur Pink Panthers 11-13 going into the break. The second half saw Jaipur Pink Panthers extend their lead through Deepak Hooda’s two-point raid and Pavan TR’s Super Tackle on Thakur. However, the home team soon levelled the scores by tackling Nitin Rawal and following it up with a 2-point Chaudhari raid which inflicted the All-Out. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Jaideep’s defensive masterclass helps Patna Pirates overcome Tamil Thalaivas Patna Pirates picked up their second win of VIVO Pro Kabaddi Season 7 after overcoming Tamil Thalaivas 24-23 at the [email protected] SVP Stadium in Mumbai on Monday. Both defences dominated proceedings, but Patna Pirates’ Jaideep shone the brightest with seven tackle points, including two Super Tackles. Tamil Thalaivas were quick off the blocks and raced into a 4-0 lead courtesy of a couple of successful tackles by Manjeet Chhillar as well as successful raids by Ajay ‘Iceman’ Thakur and Rahul ‘Showman’ Chaudhari. A Super Tackle by Jaideep, though, got the scoreboard ticking for Patna Pirates. A two-point raid in a Do-or-Die situation by Mohammad Esmaeil Maghsoudlou then tied the contest at 4-4. However, neither team could dominate the other and found it difficult to open up a lead, with both defences on top of their game. The final 10 minutes of the first half saw both sides limiting risks and choosing to score points from Do-or-Die situations. A few successful Do-or-Die raids by Tamil Thalaivas skipper Thakur looked like it had given them a slight edge towards the end of the first half. A Super Tackle by Patna Pirates’ Hadi Oshtorak and two successful raids by substitute Monu, though, ensured that nothing could separate the teams at the break with the scores tied at 11-11. Both teams’ first points of the second period came from successful tackles in Do-or-Die situations. That being said, while Tamil Thalaivas’ tackle fetched them just one point, Patna Pirates’ Jaideep produced a Super Tackle to give his team a one-point lead early in the second period. Patna Pirates looked as though they were beginning to open up a lead towards the half-hour mark after some robust tackling and raiding by Monu. A two-point raid by Chaudhari, however, dragged Tamil Thalaivas back into the game again. The topsy-turvy affair continued as Monu executed a crucial Super Tackle to give Patna Pirates a two-point lead heading into the last quarter of the game. The three-time champions took a two-point lead into the last five minutes and doubled it to four a minute later thanks to yet another successful tackle by Jaideep, and Pardeep ‘Record-Breaker’ Narwal’s first raid point of the night, which sent Manjeet to the bench. The final few minutes saw Patna Pirates put in a disciplined performance and protect their lead to eventually register a one-point victory.
