Nanjing, China, July 5, 2019 – China showed great team effort to outshine Italy in four sets (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) on Friday to complete the final four cast of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. The host team recovered from their opening day loss to Turkey in the final round by beating the Italians to stay in contention for another VNL podium finish this year. Liu Xiaotong and Liu Yanhan scored 18 points apiece, then Gong Xiangyu and Zheng Yixin added 11 points each to overwhelm their rivals. Paola Egonu topped all scorers with 38 points then Elena Pietrini contributed 14 points in the loss. With the hosts progressing to the semifinals, the 2019 VNL Finals have the same cast as last year – United States, Turkey, Brazil and China. China-Italy Match Centre Pre-match stats: China - Italy (July 5, 2019) Head-to-Head • China have a W22-L20 record against Italy in major world level competitions. • China defeated Italy 3-2 in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League preliminary round on 6 June, after trailing by two sets. This ended a five-match losing run for China against Italy at world level. • Paola Ogechi Egonu delivered 40 points for Italy in that 3-2 defeat in the 2019 VNL, one shy of the VNL record set by Poland's Malwina Smarzek who won 41 against Bulgaria on 28 May 2019. • Egonu (27) also scored the most points in the only other VNL encounter between China and Italy, a 3-1 Italian win in the 2018 preliminary round. • China could defeat Italy in back-to-back world level matches for the first time since a 3-0 at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and a 3-1 at the 2017 World Grand Prix. • The winner of this match will join Turkey, Brazil and United States in the 2019 VNL semi-finals. China • China lost 3-1 against Turkey in their first final round match in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League. • China finished in third place in the inaugural edition of the VNL in 2018. They beat Brazil in straight sets in the third-place decider (25-18, 25-22, 25-22). • China could lose successive VNL matches for the first time since losing their opening two in the 2019 preliminary round. • Only United States (18) have won more VNL matches in straight sets than China (16). • Ting Zhu (119), Xinyue Yuan (119) and Xiangyu Gong (117) are leading China in terms of scoring in the 2019 VNL. • Yanhan Liu (21) scored the most points for China in the 3-1 defeat against Turkey. Last year, they finished the preliminary round in sixth place but missed out on a spot in the final round as ninth-placed China took their ticket as hosts of the final phase. • On their debut in the VNL final round, Italy lost in straight sets to Turkey on 4 July. Paola Ogechi Egonu (12) was the only Italy player to reach 10 points that match. • Italy can suffer three successive defeats for the second time in the VNL after a run of four defeats in their opening four fixtures in last year's edition. • Elena Pietrini (208) and Indre Sorokaite (203) are Italy's leading points scorers in the 2019 VNL. Last year, Paola Ogechi Egonu (180) won most points for Italy in the VNL. • Only Turkey's Zehra Gunes (25) has more aces in the 2019 VNL than Sorokaite (24). Boryeong, Korea, June 19, 2019 - Korea celebrated defeating Asian rivals Japan in the 2019 women's FIVB Volleyball Nations League pool in Boryeong on Wednesday. Japan player Sarina Koga: "I feel disappointed looking back at the match today as we had many opportunities to score a point, yet we were unable to utilize those chances properly. The Korean players had a very fast tempo, which made it very hard to catch up. One of Korea’s assets was their strong serves." Japan coach Nakada Kumi: "Today there were many fans and members of the press present, which allowed for an exciting match. Although our team can no longer enter the VNL finals, we can now take this opportunity to practice and mend our team’s mistakes. Japan doesn’t have a star player like Korea does with Kim Yeon Koung, so we must work on our team plays. If we do not work on our defense, we will not be able to play against teams with strong serves such as Korea." Korea captain Kim Yeon Koung: "If our serves are good in the beginning of the match, then our game plays out well in general, which was the case today. Compared to yesterday we were able to score in crucial moments, which enabled us to raise the tempo of the game and keep the Japanese team from catching up. Something that helped us take the victory today was our mindset. We think that we may lose against other teams, but we can never lose against Japan." Korea player Kim Heejin: "There was an importance in winning the game itself, but the greater importance is that we were able to reduce the amount of careless mistakes which helped us win more points. The “Korean-Japanese” games were always our main match, so the players were more concentrated and focused during the game which allowed us to take the victory over the Japanese team." Korea coach Stefano Lavarini: "First I would like to congratulate the girls on their victory today. The match felt very different as the title of the “Korean-Japanese Game” affected the atmosphere of the stadium as all the fans and others were excited. About the match, we had much higher quality in offence, and in defensive situations, we improved from yesterday as we were able to connect the first and second touch to the attack." Hoffman Estates, USA, June 21, 2019 – Team USA led Japan in blocks (12-3) and aces (8-2) as it swept the Asian side, 3-0 on Friday in an FIVB Volleyball Nations League match. USA Captain Taylor Sander: “I was happy to be back in the States playing. I was just having fun and playing free. My teammates were helping me stay loose and be myself. So it was a good match. It felt good to get that win and we’re excited to play tomorrow night. I haven’t played in the States in a long time. I was with my baby last summer. Being able to play in front of a home crowd is something special. Thanks to all the fans who came out. “We always have concerns with Canada so we’re going to prepare well and hope to play with some good energy tomorrow night. “We’re always expecting them to serve tough. That’s one of their strongest things. They’re a little bit smaller in their block so they have to serve aggressively. I thought we did a good job handling their tough float serves. They were missing a couple of players tonight. We were still happy with the way we competed.” USA Coach John Speraw: “I thought we blocked the ball really well and had great energy early in the match. I thought our intensity was great. But it really started with our block and defence. Great to see Thomas Jaeschke back on the court. I think the guys were excited for him and that’s a large part why I think the energy was so great.” Japan Captain Masahiro Yanagida: “The U.S. serve put too much pressure on us. We had problems passing their serves because we are saving players for the next two days.” Japan Coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: “I’m not disappointed. We kept our starting players for the next two days. The U.S. is pretty good at serving. Our passing suffered so much. Today was not our day.” Subscribe NOW http://bit.do/FIVB-Sub Get ALL the Volleyball Action https://volleyballworld.tv FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://instagram.com/fivbvolleyball/ Facebook: https://facebook.com/FIVB.Internation...
