The Boston Celtics MADE A HUGE MISTAKE
The trade deadline is over, the Boston Celtics survived, and Anthony Davis stayed on the Pelicans, giving them a chance to trade for him in July.
But in my opinion, Boston made one huge mistake that could cost them everything.
What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check, let’s get into it.
Even after the Raptors added Kawhi, and The Bucks exploded with Giannis, I still had the Celtics as the team to come out of the East, and actually be best suited to compete with Golden State.
But throughout the whole season, we’ve seen their team chemistry and overall cohesion on the court just not being what it was last year. And that certainly reflected on their results.
So I thought to myself, this is finally it. At last Danny Ainge will use all of his assets acquired through the past 5 or so years. Some of the famous stack of draft picks, maybe trade some of the promising young talent, and get a superstar, or a legit all star, and go all out for the championship.
But then what happened? First we saw the Sixers pull the trigger for Jimmy Butler back in November, and now at the trade deadline, all of the other 3 Eastern contenders got significantly better.
Milwaukee got Mirotic and boosted the perimeter shooting and overall scoring of the team.
Toronto added Marc Gasol, and they now have a scary combination of centers, who can also spread the floor. Gasol is also a terrific passing big man so look for a lot of kickouts to open shooters, as well as Pascal Siakam on those baseline cuts.
And Philadelphia quite possibly became the scariest team of the bunch. With the addition of Tobias Harris, anyone on the starting 5 can go for 30+. And that includes Reddick who had such game just 2 days ago against the Nuggets. He was blazing hot shooting the ball.
Now even Ben Simmons who is a notoriously bad shooter can easily slash to the basket, something that he does best, and get to do it on a single coverage, since now all 4 guys stretch the floor and demand a defender to be close at all times.
And I haven’t even mentioned guys like Marjanovic, and Johnaton Simmons who will contribute off the bench. The Sixers are loaded.
Meanwhile Danny Ainge was seemingly focused on convincing New Orleans to not trade Anthony Daivs. And I’m afraid that this will ultimately prove to be fatal for them.
Again, the team clearly has been playing below everyone’s expectations, and they needed some type of change and boost in the roster.
Looking at the other 3 Eastern contenders, Boston made a big mistake staying put at the trade deadline, and in my eyes they have now fallen behind talent wise. Sure, I will never overlook Kyrie who is one of my favourite players in the league, or young superstars in the making like Tatum or Brown, but on paper top to bottom this team doesn’t feel as scary as the updated roster of the others.
OK so maybe they are waiting for Davis to build a team for the future right? Well think about it, we saw how greedy the Pelicans are in their negotiations with the Lakers. So Boston will most likely need to give up at least Tatum and possibly someone else as well.
In the meantime, Kyrie Irving’s recent statements have indicated that he is serious about leaving. And that can only become magnified in a case of a bad loss in the second round of the playoffs, which now all of a sudden, with the newest additions the chances of that increased. So then what will Boston look like in July? A team with no Kyrie who would leave in free agency, and no Tatum who will go in that trade, how is that going to be attractive for Anthony Davis.
Which brings us back to the fact that Danny Ainge and the Celtics should have pulled the trigger on a trade to make the team better and try to win now.
Although they are one of my favorite teams to watch, and I had them picked to win the East, at the moment, that isn’t looking too good to me.
It’s really going to be interesting if they can flip the switch back on in the playoffs like they did it last year. The roster stays the same, so what can Kyrie Irving, Brad Stevens and the others pull off from their bag of tricks to surprise us all and finally get through to the finals.
