Hi, I’m Naomi, and I have never believed that a love relationship would last forever, especially because my parents are divorced. I think I didn’t even believe that much in love. However, Cameron changed my mind. Cameron is not the sort of guy I thought I would fall for. I met him whilst working in a restaurant. My neighbour came in for dinner one day with some friends from his running club, and Cameron was one of them. He was tall and strong, with a ring in his ear and tattoos on both his arms. He had a very loud laugh, and even had the audacity to come out for dinner in his running kit. To be honest, I instantly judged him, assuming he was definitely not my type.
But, at the end of the evening, he was the only one of the group to personally thank me. My neighbour had told him that I also liked running, and he invited me on a run that Sunday. I was a bit nervous, not sure that we would get on, but I agreed.
We started running with each other twice a week. I wasn’t a slow runner, but usually just ran at my own pace listening to music. Cameron was fast, but always waited for me to catch up. We both loved to travel, so we talked about countries that we wanted to visit and places that we wanted to see, places that had the best hiking and running. After we’d been running, we would usually get fish and chips and sit by the sea, before daring each other to run into the water fully clothed.
I was shocked to discover that Cameron had twenty tattoos in total. I have always hated tattoos, but strangely I quite liked them on him. I was also quite shy, and usually someone as loud and outgoing as Cameron would intimidate me. But I really liked his laugh, and its ability to make complete strangers laugh and strike up a conversation with us.
After weeks of running and talking about exploring the world, Cameron asked me if I wanted to go on a hiking trip with him to the Alps. He said that we could go camping, hike along the mountain trails and do some local sightseeing too. It sounded like exactly my kind of trip! I was so excited to go! I was really starting to like Cameron, and I was secretly hoping that maybe on the trip he would ask me to be his girlfriend. I didn’t want to jump to conclusions, but we’d been spending so much time together lately, and the fact that he’d just invited me on holiday with him surely had to mean something?
Over the next few weeks we started planning for our trip. We collected a tent, planned what towns we wanted to visit and food we wanted to try. We spent ages looking at maps and tried to plan routes with the best views. We had both always wanted to see the mountains, and I couldn’t wait for my dream to become a reality. Maybe we would even see snow, and I would get to swim in a mountain lake! And I was positive that by the time we came home from the trip, I would be Cameron’s girlfriend.
Two weeks before the trip, we were both out running our favourite route- down the road then along the beach. I was so excited by telling Cameron about the new hiking boots I had bought that I forgot to properly look when walking across the road to the beach. The car had hit me before I realised what was going on. It was going way over the speed limit, so I was knocked off my feet and slammed into the windscreen. The last thing I remembered was the sound of Cameron shouting.
I woke up to bright hospital lights, and a kind nurse’s face looking at me. As she told me what had happened, I tried to sit up in bed. Pain shot down my spine and I cried out. The nurse propped me up, and I tried to reach for a drink. Both of my arms were in casts. I had broken both of my arms. The nurse told me that I had shattered my hip bone and suffered some spinal damage as well during the accident. As tears rolled down my face, the nurse fed me the water.
I had always hoped that if something like this had happened to me, I could be one of those people who were really positive and brave, always smiling and not giving up hope. It seemed trivial, but all I could think about was the hiking trip that I would now maybe never be able to go on. Cameron would never want to be with me now. That was the only thing that I had ever wanted, the thing that I had been looking forward to for months. I felt so hopeless and alone.
