Hosts Pune Pride's Indo-International Premier League (IPKL) campaign got off to a perfect start with an overwhelming 43-34 win over the Haryana Heroes at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi on Monday.

Riding on the performance of their inspirational captain and raider Abdul Sheikh, who scored 18 raid points and was also declared the Star of the Match, Pune scored big at crucial junctures of the match to register a comfortable victory.

Jitendra Yadav was the other star for Pune, inflicting 12 tackles besides scoring five raid points. For Haryana, Vikas Khatri had 11 tackles and eight raid points while Akshy Bodake also had 12 tackles to his name.

The Parle-G IPKL earlier witnessed an energetic opening ceremony which kicked off its inaugural edition with performances by Kayanat Arora and dance group MJ5, among others.

The first of the four 10-minute quarters ended with Pune coming from behind to lead 9-7. A Vikas Khatri initiated Super Tackle at a critical juncture of the second quarter put Haryana ahead 14-12 and then another Super Tackle in the quarter meant that Haryana ended the first half of the game narrowly ahead at 18-17.

Meanwhile, the dimunitive Abdul Sheikh was beginning to have his influence in the game and it was his valuable two-point raid in the dying seconds of the second quarter that got Pune within one point of Haryana.

He continued his good work at the start of the third quarter, inflicting an All Out on Haryana to start a Pune surge which saw them open up a five-point gap with less than half the quarter to go. The quarter ended 29-25 in favour of Pune.

Haryana began the final 10 minutes on a positive note, but Pune held on to their lead and a couple of two-point raids by Abdul saw the hosts open up a massive 10-point lead with just over 20 seconds to go.

They eventually closed out the game with a resounding 43-34 victory.

[Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Baliyan’s buzzer raid heroics powers U Mumba past Patna Pirates Patna Pirates outscored U Mumba in the second half, but U Mumba held on for a thrilling 34-30 win. A spectacular Super Raid by Rohit Baliyan on the buzzer ensured a 34-30 win for U Mumba against Patna Pirates at the EKA Arena by TransStadia in Ahmedabad on Friday. Patna Pirates forged a strong comeback in the second half, but U Mumba’s raiders did just enough to secure the win. Neither side took too long to get on the scoreboard, and it looked like Patna Pirates were on course to inflict an All-Out on U Mumba early on. However, a Super Tackle by U Mumba tied the score at 5-5 and gave them some impetus. The Maharashtra-based outfit then moved into the lead and began to build more momentum with Patna Pirates’ defence finding it difficult to contain U Mumba’s raiders. After seven unanswered points by U Mumba, the three-time champions finally scored a raid point through Vikas Jaglan to halt some of the opposition’s momentum. Having said that, U Mumba were still very much on top with their raiders continuing to find success against Patna Pirates’ defence. U Mumba eventually enforced the first All-Out of the match on Patna Pirates after a successful two-point raid by Athul MS was followed up with a crunching tackle. They led 17-9 after the All-Out and extended their lead further before half-time to take a 22-9 lead into the break. With just three men on the mat at the restart for Patna Pirates, U Mumba looked to drive home their advantage. The three-time champions though picked up the first points of the half courtesy of a Super Tackle on Arjun Deshwal. They followed up the Super Tackle with a two-point raid by Mohammad Esmaeil Maghsoudlou to cut U Mumba’s lead to 22-13. U Mumba, meanwhile, had to wait till the fourth minute for their first point of the half. However, Patna Pirates’ defenders had upped their game and continued to deny the opposition raiders any easy points, while Jang Kun Lee and Pardeep ‘Record-Breaker’ Narwal began finding success against U Mumba’s defence. Patna Pirates eventually enforced an All-Out with 10 minutes left in the half and reduced U Mumba’s lead to 26-21. The final 10 minutes of the contest saw both sides trade blows with the game going down to the wire. Patna Pirates kept up with U Mumba in terms of scoring thanks to successful raids by Lee, Pardeep and Maghsoudlou. U Mumba’s lead was reduced to just two points at 29-27 with a little under two minutes left on the clock. However, consecutive successful raids by Baliyan as well as a Super Raid by him with just one point to protect before the final whistle, gave U Mumba a four-point victory. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Jaipur Pink Panthers’ raiders inspire them to their fifth win of the season Jaipur Pink Panthers’ raiders allowed Puneri Paltan’s defence just one tackle point in the first 24 minutes of their 33-25 victory. An inspired effort from the raiding unit and a clinical display from the defence helped Jaipur Pink Panthers beat Puneri Paltan by a scoreline of 33-25 at the EKA Arena by TransStadia in Ahmedabad on Thursday. With this win, Jaipur Pink Panthers went level on points with second-placed Bengal Warriors in the VIVO Pro Kabaddi Season 7 standings. Jaipur Pink Panthers were off to a brisk start and quickly took a 5-3 lead courtesy of a couple of tackle points from Vishal, two raid points from skipper Deepak Hooda and another one from Nitin Rawal. Manjeet’s third point of the night and Sushant Sail’s first helped Puneri Paltan level the scores, but post that, it was all Jaipur Pink Panthers as they outscored Puneri Paltan 5-2 and reduced them down to just a solitary man. Jaipur Pink Panthers’ defence made no mistakes and inflicted the game’s first All-Out to take a 13-8 lead in the contest. In the very first raid after the All-Out, Deepak Hooda added two more points to his and the team’s score to extend Jaipur Pink Panthers’ lead to seven. Puneri Paltan managed to add three more points courtesy of their raiders before the half-time whistle, while allowing two points to Jaipur Pink Panthers to go into the break trailing 17-11. Puneri Paltan fared much better in the opening exchanges of the second half with their raiders scoring points at regular intervals. However, their defence found it difficult to curb the flow of points and the gap between the two sides remained at six, seven minutes into the half. Two consecutive points from Jaipur Pink Panthers’ Left Corner Sandeep Dhull left Puneri Paltan with just one defender on the mat and Deepak Hooda managed to get a touch point off him to inflict a second All-Out and extend his team’s lead to nine. A run of four unanswered points from Jaipur Pink Panthers reduced Puneri Paltan to just three men on the mat, but their defence showed resilience and Super Tackled Deepak Hooda to deny Jaipur Pink Panthers a third All-Out. Sail added another point to his team’s score and Surjeet Super Tackled Deepak Hooda again, as Puneri Paltan cut down Jaipur Pink Panthers’ lead to 11, sparking hope of earning at least a point from the contest. They scored three further unanswered points, but it was too little too late as time ran out, confirming Jaipur Pink Panthers’ victory by eight points. [Video Courtesy: Star Sports] Gujarat Fortunegiants finish winless at home after narrow loss against Jaipur Pink Panthers Jaipur Pink Panthers held their nerve in the closing minutes to defeat Gujarat Fortunegiants 22-19. Jaipur Pink Panthers won an intense battle against Gujarat Fortunegiants by a 22-19 scoreline at the EKA Arena by TransStadia in Ahmedabad on Friday to rise to the top of the VIVO Pro Kabaddi Season 7 standings. Pankaj scored an impressive High 5 for Gujarat Fortunegiants but was unable to stop his team from slumping to their sixth loss on the trot. Gujarat Fortunegiants picked up the first two points of the contest by sending two key Jaipur Pink Panthers players – Nitin Rawal and Amit Hooda – to the bench. But Jaipur Pink Panthers captain Deepak Hooda sprang into action by tackling Gujarat Fortunegiants’ highest-scoring raider of the season, Rohit Gulia to level the score at 2-2. Amit and Rawal then got their revenge, picking up a point on either side of the mat to give their team a two-point advantage. Sandeep Dhull extended their lead to three after tackling Sachinin a Do-or-Die raid. However, Gujarat Fortunegiants fought back through Gulia in attack and Pankaj in defence to tie the match. Amit and Deepak though continued to get Jaipur Pink Panthers ahead with their experience. The first half was a low scoring affair but ended with Jaipur Pink Panthers having a narrow 10-9 lead. The home side levelled the score in Jaipur Pink Panthers’ first raid of the second period by tackling Nilesh Salunke. However, they were unable to stop Deepak as he ensured Jaipur Pink Panthers did not surrender the advantage. Pankaj remained firm in the Left Corner for Gujarat Fortunegiants and picked up a High 5 in the 7th minute of the second period before Sachin pulled off a two-point raid, escaping Deepak and Salunke’s tackle attempts to send both Jaipur Pink Panthers’ main raiders to the bench. Dhull’s tackle on Sonu though brought Deepak back on the mat and he capitalised immediately by escaping Parvesh Bhainswal’s Block attempt to put his team on top. More G B’s two-point raid was then answered by Dhull’s tackle to send him off court in the next raid itself as Jaipur Pink Panthers maintained a one-point lead with less than two minutes to play. The visitors brought all their experience into play from there as Deepak managed a bonus before being tackled. Their defence then executed successful tackles in three successive Gujarat Fortunegiants raids to deny the home team any chance of a comeback and clinch a hard-fought victory.
